Women Of The Hour

[ad_1]

Having just ended Sell Your Haunted House, which is my top drama in the 1st half of 2021, I couldn’t help but notice the wonderful and different characterization of women in the series.

Redefining “Goals” are these Women of the Hour.

~~ Hong Ji A ~~

In other dramas, “strong women” are misrepresented as being unnecessarily dominating and rude. On the other hand, we have this show that did so much justice in portraying what “strong” can mean.

Starting with our protagonist, Hong Ji A. She has created a legacy of her own. From the professional boss (who doesn’t forget to ask the client if they have killed someone) to the all-capable exorcist (whatever situation she encounters, she fights through it). From the food lover (the food looked delicious every time) to the no-backing-down-ever charisma. Thugs are scared of her. And In Beom and Ji Cheol respect (worship) her, the ultimate protector of the area.

This role was quite different from the ones previously played by Jang Na Ra, mostly sweet characters. Surely, a refreshing change that makes me looking forward to more.

~~ Joo Hwa Jung ~~

Next in line is the secretary of Daebak Real Estate. Handling clients expertly and getting information from various sources. Tough when required, smooth when necessary. She has it all!

Her responsibilities don’t end with being a secretary. She is also an integral part of Ji A’s work and personal life. I remember how difficult it was to run and manage the business during her absence. That only proves her capability. Though she had her reasons for keeping secrets, she is the sole reason Ji A grew up to be the wonderful person she became.

Playing such a realistic working woman (regardless of the area of business), she is the ultimate treasure, the ultimate friend and family.

~~ Hong Mi Jin ~~

Ji A’s mother is another woman who had such a valuable impact.

Most of her nature and character is explained through backstories, which showed her seriousness regarding exorcism (however tough the decision was, she made it to save hundreds of other lives) and her love for her daughter (let’s not forget the “wow” moment when she came to save her daughter). The most hilarious scenario was ensured by how she constantly reminds Ji A of having too many black clothes/shoes by throwing them out in the open.

Also, if a second season happens, I would love to see Mi Jin in her duty as an exorcist and a backstory on how the Hong family got into this work.

~~ Changhwa Restaurant Owner ~~

Next up is our next-door restaurant owner.

Not only was she responsible for the huge amount of delicious food, but also helped by acting as a spy to keep watch on In Beom and Ji Cheol. A kind and strong-hearted woman who went through a lot but still found a positive side of life to move on to.

~~ Blue Salt Owner ~~

Everyone’s a boss until the real boss shows up. Her name is, I guess, not mentioned in the show. I started to cheer for her instantly the first time she showed up!

Kim Mi Kyung, known for her impactful characters throughout any show, makes every character believable. Here also, an instant crown!

Though a brief cameo, in which became clear she was the one crafting the exorcism supply for the Hong family, she played an important role on the show through her pep-talk with Ji A and providing Ji A with a place of comfort and guidance. Loved every second of it!

Other than these women, a lot of clients and spirits showed a dynamic and realistic performance. I will be looking forward to more dramas with such different shades of women.
